The story involves an attempt by an evil organization, the N.I.C.E. The central character of the earlier stories, Elwin Ransom, is the pivotal character in That Hideous Strength as well, but he plays a more limited role in the action. It is a sequel to Lewis’s Perelandra (1943) the first novel in the trilogy is Out of the Silent Planet (1938).
